How to Do Your Own Door Repair

Door repair is something that can be a DIY project for many homeowners, but there are some situations where it’s best left to a professional. In some cases, the damage may be so severe that the only option is to replace the entire door. This can be an expensive task, but it’s one that is often worth the money in order to keep the door functional and looking good.

The first thing you’ll need to do is take some measurements. This is best done with a tape measure, and you’ll want to take measurements near the top of the frame on both sides of the doorway. Using these numbers, you’ll then be able to create a rough framing measurement that will allow you to square up the doors and side jambs.

Next, you’ll need to shim the header (top) of the jamb. Shims are placed between the header and wall stud and can be adjusted until an even margin exists. When you’re finished, the top of the header should be flush with the face of the wall stud. After the shims are in place, nail 2-1/2” finishing nails through the shims to secure them.

You’ll also need to shim the side jambs, as well. This is important for ensuring that the door can open and close properly. If your jambs aren’t shimmed properly, you’ll likely experience a sagging door that will let in water, air, and bugs while putting extra strain on the heating and cooling system.

Lastly, you’ll need to fill in any gaps in the head and side jambs with caulking or wood putty. This will help to make sure that the door is completely sealed and that there are no leaks.

Replacing a door is usually a big project, and it’s a great way to change up the look of your home. You can choose from a wide variety of doors, so finding one that fits your aesthetic shouldn’t be difficult. However, replacing a door can be a big undertaking and it’s often a job that requires two people to complete.
