If you received a speeding ticket by State Trooper, you’re probably pretty upset. You probably even feel like you’ve done something wrong and now the police are after you. Well, it’s totally cool if you think that way. Many people think they deserve a speeding ticket for some reason, and they need to fight it just to prove that they’re innocent. You have many other options besides fighting your speeding ticket in New York, too. The first thing you’ll want to do is contact your state trooper of whatever state you got pulled over for your speeding violation.
They will be glad to let you know what options you have if you’d like to fight your speeding ticket in court. Some people don’t like to fight a ticket in court because they don’t think they’ll win. That’s totally fine. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a lawyer to fight your ticket, either. You might even be surprised at how much you actually can save by doing it yourself!
In most cases, you’ll have to show up to court, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a bunch of money to get there. Remember, you should always try to make your court date as close to possible, so you won’t have any extra charges added onto your speeding ticket. It’s kind of weird, but many court dates in the system are already a month or less away. If you can find a way to get to court in two weeks, that would be perfect!
Make sure you tell your court date before you go, though. You never want to let your date get booked when you haven’t been able to make it. That’ll keep you from showing up on time and having your speeding ticket thrown out. You’ll also want to tell your judge that you do plan on fighting your speeding ticket. This shows them that you’re serious about fighting the ticket and don’t plan on backing down. If they believe you, they’ll reduce your charges or at least not throw them out.
Keep a positive attitude, even if you think you know the judge is going to give you a bad vibe. You never can tell. If you get really mad, just wait for your turn to speak, then give a polite and respectful thank you to the officer who wrote the ticket. You’ll be surprised at how friendly some cops are and they may actually look forward to talking with you. They understand your frustration and would much prefer you talked about the speeding violation instead of wasting their time.
Hopefully, you’ll never need to use this tactic, but it’s always good to know what you could legally do. Some other options include giving your correct name, address, and phone number when you enter the court. If you’ve previously had your license suspended, by law you have to give your current license number. That way, you’ll be seen as being in the proper place of residence.
